Rebuilding Christchurch communities

Architectural Concept (Andrew Barrie Laboratory Ltd)

Architectural Concept (Andrew Barrie Laboratory Ltd)

Construction is underway on the rebuild of Oxford Terrace Baptist Church in Christchurch - sadly the original heritage building was severely damaged in the Canterbury Earthquakes, collapsing on February 22 2011.  However through disaster comes opportunity and the new building will enable a wide range of community based activities to be housed and hosted.

Canopy is working closely with the Church, Architect (Andrew Barrie Laboratory Ltd) and other consultants to deliver a landscaped setting for the new building incorporating many of the existing established trees in the landscape design.  New sculpture and seating will be created from stone and timbers salvaged from the heritage building.

We are looking forward to helping this project emerge from the ground over the next few months.

On a summery Saturday morning...

The Canopy Christchurch team were delighted to provide some pro-bono design concepts for the Governors Bay Jetty Restoration Trust who are working hard to save this much loved jetty that has been closed since the 2011 earthquake.

At over 300m long and nearly 150 years old the Jetty is the longest on Banks Peninsula and forms a central part of the Governors Bay identity and a landmark on the popular Allandale to Sandy Bay foreshore walkway. The Jetty is also a key feature on the Head to Head walkway that is aims to build a continuous coastal walkway around the coastline of Whakaraupō/Lyttleton Harbour, from Awaroa/Godley Head to Te Piaka/Adderley Head.

With Council unable to fund the estimated $3M of work required to restore the Jetty, the Trust has been formed by residents of the Bay to fund-raise and co-ordinate a complete rebuild of the Jetty to ensure it remains for future generations of visitors and residents to enjoy.  The Trust is gearing up their fundraising drive now so if anyone is keen to help check out their facebook page or website for more info.

With summer well on it's way take a trip out to the Bay and go check out the Jetty where, in the words of the legendary author and long time Governors Bay resident Margaret Mahy;

"Long grass grows to the edge of the sea,
The edge of the sea, the edge of the sea.
The wind is blowing wild and free
On a summery Saturday Morning.
